Gunman Steals $32k In Chips From Rio Casino At 4:30am on Thursday morning, the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas became the latest victim of casino robbers after a gunman walked away with $32,000 in gaming

chips.

Apparently, a disguised white male wearing a fake moustache, sunglasses and a hat strolled into the Rio situated near the Las Vegas Strip and started removing the chips until a dealer tried to intervene.

However, the dealer soon backed away after the robber pulled out a gun and threatened him before making his escape in a taxi. The robber is believed to have then been taken to the nearby Terrible’s Casino, where he paid his fare before making his final escape.

So far, no CCTV or photographs from the incident have been released nor has any reward been offered. This is probably, as one TwoPlusTwo forum poster put it, because the casino is trying to avoid encouraging “every degen in Vegas trying to crack the case.”

This most recent casino heist brings to mind memories of the Bellagio casino robbery of two months earlier, when $1.5 million in chips was taken by a man before fleeing on his motorcycle.

However, then most of the chips stolen were the casino’s highest denomination ones and Anthony Carleo, 29, was subsequently arrested after attempting to sell a $25,000 chips to an undercover police officer.

Commenting on yesterday’s robbery, University of Nevada gaming expert Jeff Voylus said he believed the perpetrator had a better chance of getting away with the crime and explained:

“He probably learned from the other person. That was: stay away from the $25,000 chips. If you look at the lower denomination chips — $500, or $100, or even $1,000 — (they are) easier to get back into circulation.”

The Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas is due to play host to the 2011 WSOP from May 31st through to July 19th. In the meantime the casino will now be extra keen to bolster security measures ahead of the world-renowned series of poker events.
