Atlantic City casinos slashed nearly 1,400 jobs in September.

Layoffs of seasonal employees are common after Labor Day. But the number this year is higher than the past two seasons, reflecting continued weakness in casinos' revenue picture.

The

state Casino Control Commission says all 11 casino hotels cut their payrolls last month. The trimming reduced their total work force to less than 36,000.

Atlantic City's casinos are in the midst of an extended revenue slump brought on by the ailing national economy and increasing competition from casinos in neighboring states.

Revenue from slot machines and table games has plunged 25 percent in the last three years.
