The Detroit City Council is expected to reverse course today and approve a $65-million plan to convert the MGM Grand Detroit's former temporary casino site into a new public safety headquarters.

And, after four police officers were shot in a precinct building Sunday, the mayor's office said the new

headquarters will include stronger security measures. The shooting "will dictate the type of security that will be incorporated into the new headquarters and the precincts," Mayor Dave Bing's spokeswoman Karen Dumas said Monday.Six of the nine council members rejected the plan last week over an unrelated dispute involving public TV.Council President Charles Pugh, who led the dissenters, told the Free Press on Monday that he expects his colleagues to approve the project, which would repurpose the vacant 75,000-square-foot building along the Lodge Freeway to house police, fire and EMS personnel and a state-of-the-art crime lab for Michigan State Police.Pugh said the change of heart comes after council members and Bing reopened discussions on preserving live council broadcasts on public-access Channel 10.
