Gov. Martin O'Malley and other state officials are expected to attend the grand opening at the $45 million casino near Ocean City. The 34,000-square-feet facility features 750 slot machines, whose denominations range from a penny to $5.
The casino, next to the Ocean Downs harness racetrack, hired more than 200 workers.
The casino ran a successful trial run last week, donating its $10,505 proceeds from that day to the county's American Legion Posts. The casino management also matched that amount as well as contributed its food and beverage revenues for a total donation of $23,446.
Once it opens to the public at 1 p.m., the Ocean Downs parlor joins the Hollywood Casino Perryville, which opened in late September. So far, the Cecil County casino has generated $21 million in revenue.
Voters in 2008 approved slots at five locations.
The state's largest casino is expected to be unveiled late next year at a temporary facility next to Arundel Mills mall in Anne Arundel County while a permanent parlor is under construction there.
Meanwhile, the state has been unable to attract acceptable bids for licenses to operate casinos in Baltimore and at Rocky Gap in Western Maryland.
